Holzmasken Brauner

Dieter Brauner's love of masks dates back to a time when Unsinniger Donnerstag (Foolish Thursday) was still a public holiday, at least for Ohlstadt's Maschkera (Masquerade). With private 'Gungln' on local farms, where glasses flew and musicians on the windowsill played. Brauner, who grew up in a remote and therefore craft-creative environment, wanted to be part of it and carved his own carnival mask, known here as a 'larva'.

Larva Art and Unique Wooden Pieces

This was his first work, which successfully introduced him into the local carnival scene and also laid the foundation for his career. Namely for the passionate carving of very special and unusual masks. "I like to make the wrinkles a little deeper, the face a little more twisted." This unique style can be found throughout his house. A gilded tooth gleams in the traditional larva, the plague mask sticks out a movable tongue and the Tyrolean Perchten figure has real animal horns. Dieter Brauner himself is just as surprising as his hand-carved larvae. The trained carpenter and wood sculptor has worked in a variety of different places throughout his life. "I was always also employed as a carpenter, I built guitars, for example, and eventually ended up at the Schwaiganger State Stud Farm." There he found the freedom he needed to work and was responsible for everything wood-related, from the restoration of horse-drawn carriages to the renovation of stable windows. With a wealth of experience of over 40 years that today makes his own work pieces sparkle. In his showroom in Ohlstadt, you can find many other unique wooden items in addition to the characterful masks. A real browser´s paradise. On the left is a unicorn hobbyhorse which also works as a garden ornament, on the right are church rattles for ministrants and straight ahead animal breakfast trays. Dieter Brauner's inventive spirit really comes into its own, when you are shown the secret hatch of his patentable bird villa. "I always say to customers: Look, if you can't find anything there, you won't find anything anywhere." There is much to discover.
